Drawing Hibiscus II… in Progress

Drawing Hibiscus II

… in Progress

Hibiscus II

I am currently working on Hibiscus II.  You will observe that I don’t work on just one area of the drawing at a time.  I work on the entire drawing at once in order that the values (the lights and darks) of the drawing maintain balance.  My drawings tend toward great contrast, i.e., I use rich black marks together with the stark white of the paper and a variety of grey values in between.

Tips for Drawing with Charcoal

Many beginning drawers are afraid to make black marks and as a result, they make drawings that are very light in value, lacking contrast.  One of the characteristics of charcoal that attracts me is its ability to provide a wide variety of values.  It performs well with a light touch as well as a heavier touch, and unlike graphite whose black marks become shiny, charcoal’s rich blacks remain matte.  Try creating a rich, contrasting values charcoal drawing of a subject that you have drawn lightly and compare the two… then write me with your observations and comments.  I’ll be very interested in hearing from you.
